The Artwork Odalibre

Statue of liberty!

Are we not a reflection of a society that constrains us?

Can we free ourselves from the confusion between consent and coercion?

The Meaning and Essence of the Work

A Feminine Quest for Freedom

Revisiting the popular theme of 19th-century Orientalists, Philippe Gauberti liberates these beautiful captive odalisques and sex slaves, renaming them ODALIBRES: Odalisques who have achieved the status of freedom.

An Offering to Light

Their rounded, introspective, and liberating openings are offerings to the light that inhabits them. They reflect and prompt us to reflect. In this reinterpretation, the artist denounces sexual abuse and the confusion between seduction and consent.

A Natural Yet Constrained Work

A Work Under Constraints

For monumental formats, these works are made of stainless steel and subjected to cold constraints to maintain the natural deformation of the welded plates on a stainless steel framework. The techniques of invisible welding are mastered through years of practice.

A Reflective Work, a Mirror of Society

The sculpted piece is polished to achieve a reflective finish and is sometimes coated with colored candy varnish. The smaller components are made from steel using the same cold working techniques, then polished and molded in polycarbonate resin and marble powder.
